Matthew's Talk: How Christian Mystics & the Challenges of our Time Build Bridges to Buddhist Wisdom and Deep Ecumenism

One of the hopeful sign of our times, amidst all the angst and challenges, is the movement of Deep Ecumenism or Interfaith so well named in the theme of your church for this month, "Bridge to Buddha."  In my sharing I will connect Meister Eckhart and Thich Nhat Hanh's spiritual writings and perspectives and that of Thomas Merton as well who was close to both Thich Nhat Hanh and the Dali Lama.  When we consider the mystics of the West such as Eckhart, Merton, Aquinas and others, we find ourselves on common ground with much of the wisdom of Buddhism.  Of course, common issues such as the destruction of Mother Earth as we know her also leads us to common ground and common action.

Rev. Matthew Fox, PhD, author, theologian, and activist priest, has been calling people of spirit and conscience into the Creation Spirituality lineage for over 50 years. His 37 books, lectures, retreats, and innovative education models have ignited an international movement to awaken people to be mystics and prophets, contemplative activists, who honor and defend the earth and work for justice. His recent projects include Order of the Sacred Earth, Daily Meditations with Matthew Fox, and a Certificate Program in Leadership and the Creation Spirituality Tradition. His most recent book is The Tao of Thomas Aquinas: Fierce Wisdom for Hard Times.
